Bromley has been a chartered market town since 1158, with a charter market granted by King John in 1205 still running on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The modern centre is a large retail area built around a pedestrianised High Street, with The Glades — opened in 1991 and serving a catchment of 1.3 million people — at its heart.
